Yaba! Daba! Do you want to try an Abba-Zaba Candy Bar, Fred? Wilma? You probably have been living in the stone ages if you have never eaten Abba-Zaba Candy. Your great-grandma and grandpa, who — believe it, or not — are really nowhere near stone-aged, more than likely enjoyed Abba-Zaba candy bars when they were kids, as they have been around since 1922. Just ask them…they will be happy to share their fond memories of the special treat they found in that sweet taffy with the creamy “peanut-y” center when they were youngsters.
A Retro Candy
Having been around for over 80 years, Abba Zabba is definitely in the old-fashioned candy league, along with retro candy bars, Big Hunk, Look, U-No and Rocky Road, all made by Annabelle Candy Co. in Hayward, CA. Abba-Zaba’s were first originated and produced by the candy company, Colby and McDermott, and then by Cardinet Candy Co., which bought them out. In 1978, Annabelle Candy acquired Cardinet, along with Abba-Zaba, and they’re still manufacturing it today.
Perfect Blending of Taffy and Peanut Butter
With this candy bar in such high demand for generations, it shows you the turn-of-the-century candy makers were true culinary artisans when it came to making candy. They were able to craft a perfect 2 oz blend of pure white taffy, golden brown peanut butter, and other natural ingredients together to get it right the first time. Yes, we still use the original recipe today.
Have Your Own Taffy Pull!
Everyone loves taffy, and with the Abba-Zaba taffy bar, you can have an old-fashioned taffy pull. It takes some strength, a little endurance and a lot of perseverance (that’s the fun of it!), but you can pull the bar apart. Just be sure your elbows are nowhere close to anyone’s eyes, as you could give them a shiner when you give the last bar-breaking tug on your Abba-Zabba bar.
One-of-a-Kind, Your “Only Friend”
Fast forward to the 21st Century and today you’ll find nostalgic Abba Zabba candy is kosher pareve. And it is now also made with apple-flavored taffy and can come with a chocolate center instead of peanut butter.( we no longer have this flavor, but coming out with new ones soon) With the variety of new flavors available with an Abba-Zabba bar, everyone can be delighted with its unique, chewy, long-lasting texture and delicious one-of-a-kind flavor. After all, it is a one-of-a-kind — your “only friend” — candy bar that has never been duplicated…even though we are sure other candy makers have tried. So, whadda ya say…Gotta hav-a Abba Zaba!
- Fun Fact: There was a song called “Abba Zaba”, recorded by the recently deceased Frank Zappa cohort Captain Beefheart. Here is the link to the song and lyrics: http://www.allthelyrics.com/song/314370/
